Who we are
Eric and Sarah - A couple of avid hunters who want to help you preserve your trophy.
We love the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, hiking, you name it we want to be outdoors doing it. Eric is a marine corps veteran, retired firefighter and in school for equine dentistry. Sarah is a registered nurse & taxidermist.
What we do
Skulls & Shoulder Mounts! We do skulls, and we do skulls really really well.!! Northwoods Taxidermy specializes in European mounts and antlered shoulder mounts. We’ve also added unique feather options for your bird trophies. Custom feather art pieces featuring your bird or full caped wall mount taxidermy to make your bird trophy a showpiece!
We clean skulls with flesh eating dermestid beetles. This is the absolute best way to preserve bones. These little powerhouse eaters eat the flesh without damaging even the most delicate of bones. Leaving even the nasal turbinates of even a small varmint intact.
After the beetles are done with their work, the skull goes through a complete degreasing process. This process is very animal dependent. Some take a couple of weeks, others will take a few months - depending on species and age of the animal.
Once Sarah declares degreasing is complete (if she’s not happy then no one is happy), we do a whitening process - NOT bleaching. This ensures that your trophy is ready for display.
The same attention to detail is put into every shoulder mount. We aim to capture the moment in that animal’s life immediately before your shot. The art of taxidermy is preserving the trophy to honor the life of the animal.
Bird capes are meticulously preserved entire plumage mounts. These are de-fleshed, washed, and prepared to maintain the beauty of the feathers with no odor/dirt. Then carefully arranged and mounted to hardwood bases. A great way to display large birds.
Feather art is individual feathers arranged on a framed substrate. This is done to best display the beauty of the bird’s feathers. A beautiful option for smaller birds, to save space, or to have something truly unique as each is one of a kind art produced by Northwoods Taxidermy.
